What is Hybrid work and why do employees want it?

What is a Hybrid Work Model?

Hybrid work is a flexible work model that supports a blend of in-office, remote, and on-the-go work styles. Flexible working arrangements allow employees to work wherever and however they are most productive (Webex, 2022).
Hybrid work can increase productivity and job satisfaction for employees, which leads to better outcomes for businesses. This setup encourages collaboration and creativity while enabling employees to maintain a desirable work-life balance. It also enables employers to remain competitive in the global talent market by offering more flexible work options (Webex, 2022).

The Benefits of Hybrid Work

Employees can work when and how they are most productive

Hybrid work models give employees more flexibility. Employees can choose to work from home some days or work different hours with flexible schedules and locations. This gives employees the freedom to work when they feel most productive (Fowell, T. 2021).

      Better work-life balance
Finding balance is easier with a flexible work arrangement. It is easier for employees to manage their personal lives when they have more control over their work schedules. They can work at different hours, take breaks when needed, and even adjust their work schedule to fit their needs. Flexibility can lead to less stress and a healthier work-life balance (Fowell, T. 2021).

Hire talent across the globe

In a hybrid work model, companies benefit as it allows them to access a wider pool of talent and hire from anywhere in the world. It also reduces the costs associated with physical office space and allows companies to be more agile and responsive to their customers  (Fowell, T. 2021).

Save on real estate expenses
Hybrid working can help businesses save money on office space and other overhead costs by reducing the number of people who need to be in office. This also helps to create a more flexible and efficient workplace, as employees can work from home or elsewhere. Companies can optimize their office space for the number of people who will actually be using it (Fowell, T. 2021).

3 Types of Hybrid Work Schedules

1. Remote-First

This creates an environment of flexibility and autonomy, allowing each team member to decide when their physical presence in the office is required (Aceron, J. 2022).

2. Office-Occasional

Teams will be required to attend work at the office usually on certain days only. This ensures that all members of the organization experience both remote and onsite work.
  • Split-Week - Individual team member or the organization to choose which day(s) to come into office.
  • Manager-scheduling - Managers choose which days(s) their team comes into office .

    (Aceron, J. 2022).

3. Office-First, Remote Allowed

This model provides the teams with the choice to work remotely when needed and offers stability of a consistent office schedule (Aceron, J. 2022).

What factors are driving hybrid work?

According to Webex, (2022) a hybrid approach emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic when companies switched to remote work and used virtual collaboration tools to stay productive. There were some organizations before the pandemic that had hybrid and remote workers. As a result, many businesses and individuals are now exploring hybrid work as the new normal, leveraging technology to foster collaboration and productivity while maintaining safe distancing. Organizations are now working to develop new policies and procedures that accommodate for this shift. It's important for companies to ensure that employees can still feel connected and supported, even when working remotely. Additionally, organizations will need to make sure they have the right technology and tools in place to enable successful remote collaboration.

Research and surveys reveal the following factors drive hybrid work:

  1. Remote work has proven successful - In the post pandemic future of work, nine out of ten organizations will be combining remote and on-site working, according to a new McKinsey survey of 100 executives across industries and geographies. The survey confirms that productivity and customer satisfaction have increased during the pandemic.
  2. Employees are demanding greater flexibility - according to (Dimensional Research) 58% would consider leaving their company if they had to return to the office full-time.
  3. Businesses see an opportunity to reduce travel and real estate costs - 74% of CEOs from large organizations expect to reduce their office space (Lambert, 2021).
  4. Sustainability is top of mind - According to Nature Climate Change Daily global CO2 emissions decreased by 17% during the COVID-19 pandemic, nearly half of which resulted from reduced ground transportation, according to research by Nature. Reduced commutes and business travel from hybrid work coupled with a reduction in office space heating and electricity will help promote a more sustainable future.

What’s the best collaboration solution for hybrid work?

The most important thing is to evaluate the different collaboration solutions that are available and organization to make an informed decision by identifying the best fit.

When assessing the best hybrid work solution, each employee's experience and needs must be considered (Webex, 2022).
Below questions are to be considered as a starting point:
  1. Are my employees equipped to work from home?
  2. Can my employees expect the same collaboration experience in the office or at home?
  3. Can the solution provide IT with the ability to easily scale, monitor, and manage the experience when employees are working from home or in the office?
  4. Do employees feel included in meetings? Are there easy ways for them to engage and be seen and heard?
  5. Is the collaboration solution secure?

To overcome these challenges,
  • A leader needs to assist their employees in leveraging the right tools.
  • Enhance connectivity.
  • set realistic expectations, and create a timeline.
  • Distractions must be minimized.
  • Well-being should be emphasized.
  • Engage employees through authentic and adaptive experiences.
Andrews, S. (2022).

Conclusion

Hybrid working models have benefited both employees and employers.

Hybrid working models allow employees to have more flexibility and autonomy, while employers can benefit from cost reductions and higher productivity. Additionally, hybrid working models provide more access to global talent and can help with employee retention. This model has become increasingly popular as a result, and many companies offer some form of hybrid workplace. This provides employees with the choice to work remotely or in the office. As a result, employees can achieve a better work-life balance.

  3. I like the fact that this article focuses more on the positive side, but sadly as we all know there is a dark side to this as well. Distractions, less face time, and increased isolation can be the basics we can talk about. But when analyzed deeply this method has created more issues in mental health than usual. Many who love their work have ended up having severe burnout or depression due to the extensive workload that has been put on them since many managers don't consider an employee's personal space. And also as mentioned by M Shadeer, this can be implemented only in a few sectors. So all in all I believe that if we can overcome the drawbacks this can be a good initiative for many organizations in many ways.

  4. I agree that while remote work has many benefits, it also has its drawbacks. It's important to ensure that employees have a healthy work-life balance and that their mental health is taken into consideration. Making sure that managers are sympathetic and understanding of their employees' needs is key to ensure that the remote work system is successful.

  6. Remote work has become increasingly popular in recent years, especially in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. With the advent of digital communication technologies, it has become easier for people to work from anywhere in the world, without having to be physically present in an office. This has created new opportunities for skilled labor, as well as new challenges for employers and employees alike. Regarding to the skill based professions this is not that much practical.

  7. It is not a practical solution for all professions. For certain types of jobs, there is still no substitute for face-to-face interactions and the benefits of working in an office environment. However, for certain professions remote work offers a viable solution that can be beneficial to both employers and employees.

  8. Valuable article Gowri , According to Kirkham,A., Hybrid work has transformed the way we think about work. It’s a flexible, modern way of working that’s been swarming around the working world for years. Yet, despite being popular with so many companies worldwide, hybrid work isn’t one-size-fits-all. Instead, it comes in different forms for different businesses and their employees. In this post, we’ll explore what a hybrid work model is, including how you can transition to one smoothly.
In an office-first model, people are expected to be on the clock between 9 am and 5 pm every workday. In a hybrid work model, employees have more flexibility to get work done when, how, and where they’re most productive. This means flexible schedules and locations. For example, some people work best early in the morning while others do better in the evening. They can also choose to work with teammates onsite or do heads-down work from a remote location.
In a report by McKinsey, 87% of employees would take the chance to work more flexibly if their employers offered it. Flexibility is what powers hybrid work, and according to Slack, it’s a key reason why employees are attracted to the hybrid work model.
