What is diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI)?
Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) is a critical concept that is gaining more attention and focus in the corporate world.
According to Rosencrance, (2021) Diversity equity and Inclusion are three distinct concepts but are interconnected. Together, they strive to create a work environment that is respectful and fair to all the team members and allows everyone to bring their best selves to work. DEI is focused on the effective recruiting and hiring process. This ensures that qualified candidates from diverse backgrounds are given equal consideration and opportunity. Ultimately, this leads to a more diverse and innovative workforce. Companies can create an environment where individuals feel valued regardless of their background or identity by actively overcoming unconscious biases and mitigating micro aggressions.
What is diversity?
Diversity refers to the elements that make people different, such as the different characteristics that distinguish one demographic or individual from another. This includes gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and disability. Having a diverse workforce, organizations can tap into a broader range of perspectives, skills, and experiences. This can lead to more innovative solutions and creativity (Rosencrance, 2021).

What is equity?
Equity creates an environment where all individuals have equal access to resources and opportunities. Equity is concerned with identifying and removing barriers that hinder some groups from fully participating in particular jobs and industries. This is done by creating inclusive and fair policies and systems. Equity focuses on the systemic issues that cause unequal access, rather than solely on the individuals affected. It is an important part of creating a more equitable society (Rosencrance, 2021)

To create an inclusive workplace,
companies should create a safe environment where people can speak up and be
heard without fear of discrimination (McKinsey,
2022).
DEI Issues in the Workplace and How to Overcome Them
Challenge #1: DEI is not given sufficient attention and is seen as a less important.
Solution: DEI to be given the same importance as other business objectives.
Challenge #2: Limited efforts towards DEI, result in lack of focus and non-trackable outcomes.
Solution: Make it clear that DEI is priority, and demonstrate commitment to its success by allocating the necessary resources.
Challenge #3: Insufficient resources allocated to ensure DEI initiatives.
Solution: Demonstrate the value of DEI by gathering allies to ensure its success.
Challenge #4: Barriers which prevent companies from developing an inclusive and equitable environment.
Solution: Leaders must assess and discuss Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives in order to diminish potential biases and issues.
Challenge #5: To differentiate the

Initiatives related to DEI seek to advance the treatment of people fairly and respectfully, irrespective of their differences in background, identity, and culture. Tokenism, reverse discrimination, stereotyping, and segregation are just a few of the negative effects that can result from incorrect application or misinterpretation. Successful DEI initiatives should foster an inclusive culture that values diversity without unintended negative effects.
